Guest Designer July 2019

Hello,

Cindy here to introduce you this July’s Guest Designer – Char Kochensparger, one of our former design team member !  I’d bet you’re familiar with her Digi Duel posts in the past, a talented lady indeed!!  Let’s see what she has installed for us.

Hey, friends, so happy to be guesting today at a2z! I love that this month’s challenge is Sparkle & Shine, because I’m all about the glitter!

I decided to make a card with a technique I saw on Jennifer McGuire’s blog and I wanted to try something a little different, so I cut the front off the card edge so my large die cut would jut off the edge. Keep in mind that I tried this technique on the pearl alcohol inks and the original inks. I couldn’t get good results with the pearl inks, though your results might be different. So I stuck with the original alcohol inks. Here’s how I created this one.

Supplies used:

I used Hero Arts Nesting Infinity Heart Dies but if you don’t have it, other dies such as Hero Arts Nesting Circle Infinity Dies works just as well.

You can check out some of my social media for more projects. I’m @chark99 on IG and my blog is Glitter In My Kitchen

Awesome!!  Thank you so much Char for guest designing for a2z this month!

Mini Note Pad Holder

Hello Crafty Friends – Annie here with a fun project.

You can make this in about an hour or less.

These mini note pad holders are perfect to add to a gift basket or just as is.Adobe_20190529_204825

So, Let’s begin the project. – I like to break it down into a few steps.

1. Stamp the images (which are layering bird, leaves, branch and flowers). Fussy cut them. Then, Stamp the sentiment on a banner shape. Set them aside while you work on the cover. Next, trim the 12″ x 12″ White heavyweight card stock into 3-1/2″ x 11-3/4″.  Save the remaining card stock for another project.
2. let’s score the cover for our note pad. Using a scoring board or a trimmer channel – using the bone folder – score at  5″ & 5-1/4″.  Then at 10-1/4″ & 10- 3/8″. Next, crease the score lines – using the bone folder.

3. Apply a bit of gesso to your cover. heat set or air dry (I heat set). Then, spray some Heidi Swapp Color Shine, Tim Holtz Distress Stain Spray. Heat set to dry.

4. Adhere the pad into the cover. Place adhesive of choice on the back of the note pad and the creased section of the cover. I added an extra piece cardstock to the inside of the cover as well as to the bottom closer.  Press firmly.

Next, push on the crease to the top of the note pad really sticks to the cover. I use the bone folder to press it. Plus it will give it a nice crisp look.

5. Now, Adhere the branch to the cover. Then, the larger flowers. Followed by the leaves and the smaller flowers which I added a bit of foam adhesive.

Next, adhere the bird to the branch having the back leg touching the branch. Then, add the sentiment onto a banner and adhere to the bottom flap.

6. Now, for the closer – I peel off one Velcro tab and center it onto the other – stacking them. The Velcro has strong adhesive this is why I only expose one side first – I then center the Velcro stack onto the lower tab – press in place – then remove the remain plastic backing and press the lower tab closed.

Finally, Add a few embellishments. I added a few sequins at the top left and by the sentiment. I added one to each of the flower centers.

Now, your Mini Notepad Holder is complete!
You can Modify this tutorial using a masculine design and colors.

Thank you for stopping by the blog today. I hope you found some inspiration!

prairie final 2

I received the Hero Arts On the Prairie Fancy die set in a gift package and I was stumped on how I was going to use it.  I’ve always been a fan of Southwestern Art so I loved the set and it seemed that a card just couldn’t do it justice.  So I decided to make a wall hanging.  I hope you like it as much as I do!  If you are interested in seeing how this was made feel free to jump on over to my personal blog, Art Without Anxiety.   Hope to see your creations in the challenge! See you soon!

Go Wild with Hero Arts Digital Download

So, I realised there was one digital download I had yet to use and it is the Hero Arts Digital Download Go Wild DK117 which has a groovy leopard and zebra print and so this layout is all about using those and of course, flowers, for the ‘flower power’ theme.  They just look so groovy.  I coloured them in photoshop and printed them out on gloss photo paper and cut them up into strips to create my photo matt.  They were a bit too clean and even though I stamped around the edges, I still wanted to grunge things up a bit and so I grabbed some brown ink and dribbled that around the edges.  I was happy then!

Jacobi-a2zaprilgowild1After that it is the ever arduous job of digging through my huge supply of ephemera and finding the right pieces to use.  I think that is the part I enjoy the least in the creative process, just having to find the pieces I want with regards to ephemera, perhaps I am just lazy, I am not sure, I just find it tedious is all.  Anyway, lots of flowering and embossing of chipboard and die cutting and then loads of blingy embellishment to finish it off.  It is all pretty groovy and comes together nicely – I think so anyway.  Couple of close ups.

Now I have this new family with all these children in my life, I have an abundance of photo’s to use and so I must print some out.  Too funny, I went from a really boring life in the city, on the outskirts more so to a busy life in rural New South Wales, Australia and with 4 children now there are always photo opportunities to be taken advantage of.  Whereas before, we never did anything and were totally non social and so I never had anything to take photo’s of which is why I started leaving a blank canvas.  Funny how life changes, as long as it is always for the better.

Stay well people, remember to smile and take the time to appreciate everything that passes you by.  Smiles, Delia

Love is in the air … with sunflowers from Hero Arts Bright Blossoms Download

I love sunflowers, there is just something wonderfully happy about them.  Where I live, they grow randomly beside the road and each stalk has many sunflowers, not just one per plant.  I often stop and pick them when I am driving home as they are just so gorgeous.  So, when I saw that the theme this month is about love, I know, most would go red with the roses, but I am more of a sunflower kind of gal.

So, I grabbed yet another digital download, I know, call me Digital Download Delia!  Ha!  This is the Hero Arts Digital Download Bright Blossoms PT003.  I was going to do the usual and colour them in by hand, but I changed and coloured them quickly in photoshop and then duplicated it up at different sizes and printed them out on photo paper and cut them out.  I wanted this design to be all about the sunflowers and it surely is.  So bright and so happy.  The circular frames are from Dusty Attic and I just painted them Nuvo Arts Blue Wax mousse paint and embellished them with a few little sparkles.  The little scrabble squares spelling out LOVE are just so darn cute.  I may add more to this page at a later date, but if I don’t press publish, I may be very late!

Brightblossom

Here is a wee pic of the layout, not much bling or things as I really let the flowers dominate the page.

Jacobi-scrapbookingpage-a2zFeb1of2

Well, I sincerely hope your lives are much less chaotic than mine currently.  I am constantly amazed at how much busier my life is living on a farm.  I am not even sure if busy is the right word, but there certainly never seems to be enough hours in the day – most especially when a number of those hours must be spent having a nap some days.  Stay well and happy people, may your lives be full of love – with roses, sunflowers or awesome cuddles – or all three.

Smiles, Delia

Hero Arts Good-bye and Good Luck tag

Hello crafty peeps! Leslie here to share a DT inspiration project with you today, a fun good luck tag I created using the Hero Arts Vintage Travel Digital Kit along with the Hero Arts Pop Pattern Stencil. I printed a vintage car, international postage and two suitcases on ivory cardstock, fussy cut them all and set them aside. I cut the top corners off diagonally to make the rectangular package insert tag-shaped, and then covered it with Postale tissue wrap. I added a strip of torn page from an old paperback novel, and then applied texture crackle paste with a mini dot stencil. When that dried, I spritzed pink and blue India ink over the tag and let the ink run.

2017_12090006a

I watered down some brown acrylic paint and brushed it over the antique car and when it was dry, I adhered it to the tag with foam tape. I adhered the international postage, the pair of suitcases, a pretty Prima flower, some crocheted lace with zipper trim, and then the sentiment. I inked the edges with Walnut Stain distress ink,  and the final touch was splattered brown acrylic paint mixed with a little water.

Hero Arts Merry Christmas Wall Hanging

Hi everyone! Leslie here to share a DT inspiration project with you today, a fun and frosty mixed media wall hanging I created for the Christmas holidays.  I used the Hero Arts Color Layering Holly stamp set and coordinating Hero Arts Color Layering Holly Frame Cuts. I thoroughly enjoyed creating this!

I started by brayering red and green acrylic paints onto a 5×5 Gessobord. I then applied texture paste over two different stencils on several areas, splattered black gesso mixed with water over the piece and let dry. I mixed white gesso with a little water and brushed it over the entire piece to mute the colors a bit. Once that was dry, I played with some red and green watercolors, letting some of it run and splattering some of it. I also inked the edges.

2017_10100007a

I stamped the sentiment in black StazOn on vellum, cut flag ends and set it aside. I then stamped and die cut 16 holly leaves, arranged them to form a wreath (staggered in three layers) and adhered them to the Gessobord. I added shiny red sequins for berries and a multi-loop bow with a double loop of cording beneath it and a brad in the center. I rolled up some script paper and adhered the tubes in the center of the wreath for some interest, then affixed the sentiment. I finished the piece by smearing grit paste on a few areas and splattering Copic Opaque mixed with water. I also added some thick cording for a hanger.

Still casing designers with Hero Arts Digi Download “A Natural Holiday”

Yes, Delia again, maybe ever so slightly late.  Super sorry, life just got a little busier than normal for me – life changing things even.  Okay, so, I have gone Christmassy, so early, I know!  I am not a big Christmas fan, never have been once I grew up I guess.  I love it if it is all about family and getting together and having fun, but if it is about presents, presents and more presents, then I am not so interested.

il_570xN.640981594_iam3

Hero Arts have some super digital downloads and quite a few for Christmas too and some for Halloween, that hopefully will be next month.  I used the Hero Arts Digital Download A Natural Holiday and cut out the elements on my Silhouette Cameo on some chipboard, white gessoed them and then I painted the big tree after cutting it in half with Nuvo wax pastes in blue and then the other elements I embossed mostly.  However, before I stuck things down I rummaged through my very small stash of Hero Arts stamps and I found this set and used the corner flourish with black Hero Arts ink and stamped it in a circular pattern around where the snowflake would sit – can’t see it anymore though!

IMG_9100

It is hard to see all the elements that went into this design and I struggle with that.  However, if I want to successfully case Ola, I need to get far better at layering and being comfortable with elements being covered up.  It just seems so wasteful if you cannot see and appreciate every element.  Is that just me?  There is a gorgeous snowflake that I cut out that comes from the Silhouette store, I painted this dark blue with Nuvo wax pastes and put some Hero Arts silver embossing powder on the edges outside of the photo area.  I then made my photo matt and adhered some sparkly white and silver fabric I had around it in a ripple effect, raised this area up on a few bits of cardboard and I was ready for ephemera.

This set of digital images is well designed for cutting, you need to be a bit delicate with the Merry Christmas words.  I actually chopped these apart as they come joined.  One difficulty I keep finding, is trying to find a good dark blue flower, but I found a few that sufficed and I guess I can always paint them! hehe  I always finish off my designs with a bit of bling and so I used some silver flat back pearly things, Finnabair art stones, glitter, microbeads and various little fingernail decorations and mix them all up with some gel and water and decorate.

All done for this month, take care all, be safe, I am off on my new life adventure, so not sure when I will be back, but hopefully late next month.

Smiles, Delia

Casing Ola again with Hero Arts Pretty Blossoms Digital Download

Hi again, I hope your September is going well. I am still in my infatuated with Ola Khomenok stage and so once again I chose another of her fabulous designs.  This is a link to her video tutorial.IMG_8501

So, here is my layout in response to our current ‘Case a Designer’ challenge this month.

Jacobi-scrapbookpage-a2zseptno2e

The papers are some new ones I just got under the DCWV brand that have some lovely foiled copper pages throughout which allows you to make some beautiful embellishments to use in your design.  I wanted lots of different types of embellishments in my layout to make up for some of the amazing elements Ola has to use.  My main frame is from Dusty Attic which I embossed using green, pink and copper embossing powders.  My use of the Pretty Blossoms Digital Download played a large part in my use of ephemera, I printed them out on white card and then painted them roughly with some cheap glitter paints as I only wanted the colour to be subtle, cut them out and then added pearls and sequins or whatever into the middles to make them have a little bit of bling.  I do love my bling.

il_570xN-1.633673409_6g90

There are quite a few die cut pieces, but these are from dies collected over time and removed from their packaging, but obviously you just use whatever you have in  your stash and bring it all together, building up layers and then finishing up with a few more bits of shiny stuff.  All done, seems so simple, but it honestly takes me about 3 days to do a layout like this.  I am quite sure that I spend the most time just staring it and wondering what to do, what to use, trying to remember everything I have in my stashes. But, if you watch Ola, she just throws it all together, so quickly and effortlessly.  Clearly I need to practice more …. ohhh, if I have toooooo.  Like, my pleasure, hehehe.  I have done a few of these layouts now, to see more of them, please visit Jacobi Creations or my Jacobi Creations Blog.

That’s all for now, have a lovely week.  Delia

Casing a Designer with Hero Arts Feathers

Happy September all.  Delia again, with another take on using digital files, while also keeping it in the theme of “Case a Designer”.  Well, I have a few favourite designers, but at the very, very top is a most amazing lady called Ola Khomenok, she is from the Ukraine and her work is amazing, lots of layers, colours and just bits and pieces.  She uses loads of stencils initially when building up her page and then she makes what she does look sooo easy and it truly does my head in.  I watch her videos over and over again and am always left in awe of her talent.  I am trying very hard to emulate her style at the moment which I call “collage style”, but it really is just “Ola style” as she has a truly beautiful talent that I am actually very jelly of.  Aaaagh, but it is always good to have those that push us to be better.  I am not sure what my issue is in my difficulty in trying to emulate her style, but I think it has a lot to do with wastage.  I am frugal when it comes to using my large collection of flowers, chipboard, ephemera and bits and pieces as it all costs lots of money and I just don’t want to waste it – even though it isn’t really wasting it.  I know that Ola is on some major design teams and would be showered with product and deservedly so, but that is not reality for most of us and so I am very considered when I put my layouts together.  I also am just not yet as talented as she!

Jacobi-scrapbookpage-a2zsept1

So, here is my layout using the Hero Arts Feather Digital Cut file, which has the most awesome feather shape ever!  Clearly that was my hero in the layout, but I had lots of fun with this layout.  Firstly, I put the feathers through my Silhouette machine and then out came the Nuvo wax pastes in various colours and painted them and then I foiled them and sealed the foil off.  May I say how tedious foiling is…. those fiddly things and me are not the greatest of friends.  I truly did hide behind the door when patience was handed out.  So, I had a bit of fun with colouring and things, building up the layers, adding more and more bits and pieces, until all finished.

That’s all from me until another week passes when I shall return with another ‘Case a Designer’ layout, which will probably be all about Ola.  She is my current challenge and I am not giving up until I can learn her skill and put it in my repertoire.  So, be kind, be good and enjoy your inner creative.  Please visit me at my website www.jacobicreations.com or my blog at jacobicreations.blogspot.com.au
